Since joining the CFHE fam in November, Tony has consistently left everything on the floor each class. He’s successfully walked the line of knowing when to scale/modify and when to push himself harder (a skill most of us envy but don’t possess). Over the last few months, his once seemingly impossible overhead squat has drastically improved, he’s now stringing together double unders, and he’s kipping his pull-ups. Tony is a keen listener and quietly encourages others in class and genuinely celebrates in others’ successes.
WHAT INITIALLY GOT YOU INTO CROSSFIT AND WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
I initially got into CrossFit because I felt out of shape, was not very active, and I had had to do something about my love handles. I had read a lot about CrossFit and thought it would be a good fit for me for a number of reasons. I liked the fact that workouts were prepared for me, were scaleable, and done in basically an hour. There's an element of competition that makes the workout fun. There's also a certain amount of accountability as well which I know that I would fail at if I were working out on my own. The thing that keeps me coming back are the other athletes and coaches that push you during workouts and also celebrate your successes.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
I am a father of twin 15 year old boys and a 5 year old girl. They keep me pretty busy. I am a real estate agent and love my job as it affords me the opportunity to spend time with my family. My wife and I like to entertain, BBQ, try new restaurants when we can, and gamble once in a while. I enjoy watching sports especially the Dallas Cowboys, the five time world champions. And, while I don't get to play often, I like to play poker and hope one day to play in the World Series of Poker. . . . I just need to come up with the $10k entry fee.
WHAT’S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT OR GOAL YOU’VE REACHED DUE TO CROSSFIT THAT’S MADE YOU THE MOST PROUD?
When I first started Crossfit I couldn't do more than two double unders in a row or more than one or two pull-ups. I am improving a lot on my DU's (strung thirteen together today and did 40 as a part of a WOD) and I can do kipping pullups now as well.
IF THERE WAS ONE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT YOU’D LIKE TO PERFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Overhead squat or snatch. These are so hard for me but I can see a little improvement each time.
ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN TRYING OUT CROSSFIT?
Just come in the door and get started. A part of my fear was what others would think of my performance. I have learned that everyone is trying just as hard to get through a workout. Leave your ego at the door and come sweat it out with everyone.
