Chris Chappel is a name you’ll see at the top of our gym leaderboard each day. His effort, performance, and victories are consistent from daily wods to his ranking in the CrossFit Open. Chris is encouraging and pushes the other athletes in class. He seeks out feedback from his coaches and actively applies their suggestions to improve. Read on to learn more about our May Athlete of the Month!

WHAT INITIALLY GOT YOU INTO CROSSFIT AND WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?

About 4 years ago our good friend and Coach, Matt Reahm told me to come check out this place called Xyston. Even though the name sounded like some strange Cult, I decided to go. The workout was totally different and way more difficult than anything I had done... and even back then, before all of Matt's injuries, I crushed him and knew this was the place for me. There are a few things that keep me coming back; Eazy's incredible programming (it really is the best around), the people I've gotten to know along the way and the awesome Coaches. I've dropped in on a lot of other places and we have the best on all fronts! Oh yeah, and I really like getting beat by Gaby every morning... that's been a lot of fun.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?

Outside the gym I love spending time with my wife Jonnetta and our 4 kids. When I'm not going to watch them play sports I like to golf and drink beer.


WHAT’S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT OR GOAL YOU’VE REACHED DUE TO CROSSFIT THAT’S MADE YOU THE MOST PROUD?

I remember when everything was really hard and my body would get super sore after every workout. I couldn't do muscle ups, butterfly pull ups, double unders, snatches... you name it. I think I'm most proud of just sticking to it. The cool thing is the core group in out 5:30 am class has stuck to it also and I've seen all of us do things we probably never thought we'd get.

IF THERE WAS ONE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT YOU’D LIKE TO PERFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The Snatch. I can't believe how much weight some of these athletes can do and I know it's all about technique. Maybe some day I will do more than 200 lbs then Eazy will like me as much as Brian and Bryce.

ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN TRYING OUT CROSSFIT?

It can be a little intimidating walking in the door, but you'll find that's the hardest part. Once you get to know the Coaches and the people around you everything starts to get easier. Just try it!
