While the NFL awarded Julien Edelman the MVP award at the Super Bowl last night, we’d like to bestow CFHE’s coveted Athlete of the Month award to one very deserving athlete: Lissete Bonilla. Edelman and Lissete share a similar story on their journey to greatness: they were both setback by injuries, but didn’t let it stop them from pushing on towards excellence. Lissete suffered a broken finger, but insisted on modifying movements until her finger healed…and she continued improving. Lissete is encouraging, positive, and an inspiration to all of us.
WHAT INITIALLY GOT YOU INTO CROSSFIT AND WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
My older brother had been doing crossfit for a while and encouraged me to try it. I was initially very hesitant that I would be able to keep up! I had hit a plateau going to a regular HIIT gym and was looking for more. I remember being so nervous my first day but instantly fell in love with the challenge. Crossfit is a great mental and physical challenge. I also use it as my self care tool as I have a demanding job. I love to see the progress and that's what keeps me coming back.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
Outside of the gym, I work as a Child Protection Investigator for the State of Illinois. I have an 11 year old son and 2 dogs. I'm a basketball mom on the weekends and soon to start Graduate school. I also love to travel and dance!
WHAT’S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT OR GOAL YOU’VE REACHED DUE TO CROSSFIT THAT’S MADE YOU THE MOST PROUD?
When I first started back in July of 2018 I could only deadlift about 65 lbs. I can remember the bar feeling heavy. I can deadlift 165 lbs now!
IF THERE WAS ONE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT YOU’D LIKE TO PERFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Oh my goodness! Squat snatch and over head squats for sure! Still working on my balance.
ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN TRYING OUT CROSSFIT?
Dooooo it!!! I still scale a lot of work outs! It's a fun community and you will not regret it!
