Leah dela Cruz is 2018’s final Athlete of the Month and we can’t think of a better way to end the year. Leah never cheats a rep, never complains, and never gives up. She is always asking for ways to improve her movements/lifts and takes criticism with a smile on her face.
WHAT INITIALLY GOT YOU INTO CROSSFIT AND WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
Like a lot of people, I had heard about CrossFit for a long time, but was intimidated by what I thought it was going to be, so I put off joining. I had been going to a regular gym for a while, and though I saw results, I was plateauing and needed a change. I finally bit the bullet, and gave in to taking a look at what CrossFit was all about. One of the best decisions I ever made. The things that keep me coming back are the people and the changes I have seen in myself. The coaches push you as far as you can go, and sometimes just a little bit further. You may think a little too far, but once you get there, you start believing you can keep going. Also, the people in the classes are there with you, going through the same grueling workouts. They are there to encourage you, or just lend an ear to listen to your complaints. Although it has been slow and steady, I am becoming a better version of myself, both physically and mentally.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
Outside of the gym, I work a 9 to 5, and love spending time with friends and family. I could also be catching up on my dvr, reading a book, or singing along to the radio/Pandora.
WHAT’S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT OR GOAL YOU’VE REACHED DUE TO CROSSFIT THAT’S MADE YOU THE MOST PROUD?
I have achieved many things that I did not think I could. The most recent milestone that stands out was getting back to my driver’s license weight. It wasn’t even a goal at the time, but I got excited when I realized I had done it. Of course, I could not have done it alone, I have the coaches and those in my classes to thank.
IF THERE WAS ONE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT YOU’D LIKE TO PERFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
There are many moves that I would like to perfect. One of the top moves would have to be the double unders, those suckers always get me. I tend to leave with temporary battle scars, so I hope to alleviate that problem soon.
ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN TRYING OUT CROSSFIT?
If you are the least bit interested in trying out CrossFit, go into a location near you and check it out. Leave any self-doubt at the door. Do what you can do, and don’t give up. Keep coming back, and you will keep getting better and stronger.
